Title Sponsorship Beyond Visibility
For the fifth consecutive year, Absa Bank returns as the title sponsor of the Sirikwa Classic Cross Country, a World Athletics Gold Label event that has steadily grown into one of Africa’s most respected cross-country races. What began as a strategic sponsorship has evolved into a long-term investment in Kenyan athletics, one that blends elite sport, athlete welfare, and community impact.
Speaking on the partnership, Caroline Wairugu, Absa Kenya Senior Communications Manager, emphasized that the bank’s commitment has been deliberate and progressive. Athletics Kenya has done tremendous work in building the sport and taking it to the next stage. Kenya is globally known for athletics, and we are committed to walking this journey together for many more years,” she said.
Across four completed editions and now into the fifth, Absa’s role has extended far beyond branding rights, anchoring the event’s growth, credibility, and international standing.
Sustained Investment Across Five Editions
Over the past four editions, Absa Bank has consistently invested in the organizational capacity, athlete experience, and international positioning of the Sirikwa Classic. This sustained backing has enabled the race to meet increasingly stringent World Athletics standards—culminating in its Gold Label status.

The investment has supported course development, event logistics, athlete services, media visibility, and stakeholder engagement, helping transform the Sirikwa Classic into a professionally run global event capable of attracting top local and international talent.
By committing across multiple editions rather than a one-off sponsorship, Absa has provided the stability required for long-term planning, something critical in elite sport. The fifth edition now stands as a reflection of cumulative investment, where lessons from previous years have translated into improved delivery and greater global appeal.
Investing in Athletes Beyond Competition
Central to Absa Bank’s sponsorship philosophy is the belief that athlete development does not stop at the finish line. Beyond funding the event, the bank has invested heavily in athlete education, financial literacy, and wellness, recognizing that long-term success requires more than medals.
Through its collaboration with marathon legend Eliud Kipchoge, Absa has rolled out initiatives focused on guiding young athletes on how to manage success responsibly. “We meet athletes at the point of their need,” Wairugu noted. “We show them small but practical tips on how to save, invest, and protect what they have earned.”

This approach addresses a critical gap in athletics, where young runners often transition rapidly from poverty to prize money without the tools to manage it sustainably. Absa’s intervention positions financial literacy as a performance enabler, not an afterthought.
Community-Centred Impact
Absa’s investment in the Sirikwa Classic also extends into the surrounding community. As part of activities around the fifth edition, the bank, through the Absa Kenya Foundation, will visit Jasho Primary School, where it will conduct donations, financial literacy training, wellness sessions, and tree-planting activities.

These engagements reinforce the idea that the Sirikwa Classic is not an isolated elite event, but a community-rooted competition with shared value. By linking world-class sport to education, environmental stewardship, and financial awareness, Absa is embedding athletics within broader development goals.
“We are trying to grow talent while nurturing what has already been established,” Wairugu said, underlining the bank’s dual focus on emerging athletes and the systems that support them.
Strengthening Kenya’s Global Athletics Brand
The Sirikwa Classic’s rise to Gold Label status has enhanced Kenya’s standing as a global athletics destination. With Absa’s backing, the event has become a platform that showcases Kenya’s organizational capability, competitive depth, and commitment to excellence.
This sustained sponsorship contributes to Kenya’s broader athletics economy, attracting international athletes, media attention, and institutional confidence. For Athletics Kenya, Absa’s long-term investment has provided a reliable partner aligned with the federation’s vision of structured growth and global relevance.
Walking the Journey Together
As the Sirikwa Classic enters its fifth edition, Absa Bank’s role as title sponsor reflects a model of patient, values-driven sports investment. Rather than short-term visibility, the bank has chosen continuity, impact, and partnership, walking alongside Athletics Kenya and athletes through growth, transition, and ambition.
From elite competition to grassroots engagement, from financial literacy to environmental action, Absa’s investment has helped shape the Sirikwa Classic into more than a race. It has become a statement of what is possible when corporate commitment aligns with sporting excellence.
In Kenyan athletics, few partnerships tell that story as consistently and as convincingly as Absa Bank and the Sirikwa Classic.
